In a gaming landscape largely ruled by the EA Sports FC franchise, the developer Sloclap is eager to carve out a niche for itself with its new title, Rematch. This game aims to offer a fresh perspective on soccer, appealing to players who are looking for an alternative experience in the world of football. With a focus on dynamic, fast-paced 5v5 matches, Rematch emphasizes the importance of teamwork and strategic gameplay, setting it apart from its more mainstream counterparts.
Recently, Game Rant had the opportunity to chat with Pierre Tarno, the Creative Director at Sloclap. During this engaging conversation, he shared insights into what the team envisions for their upcoming title, Rematch, and highlighted the unique elements that they believe will set it apart within its genre. A significant focus of the discussion was on the crucial role of teamwork in the game, emphasizing how collaboration among players will enhance the overall experience.
Immersion is Crucial For Rematch’s Success
Players familiar with Absolver or Sifu are likely aware of Sloclap’s strong emphasis on creating an immersive experience. Both titles showcase a fluid combat system that appears straightforward at first glance, yet offers layers of complexity for those who wish to master it. Sloclap has seemingly perfected the art of combat mechanics in video games, leading many to anticipate that their upcoming project would build upon this successful formula. However, the new soccer game, Rematch, takes a surprising turn, diverging from the expected path.
‘There are similarities. These are all games about bodies in movement, with a focus on precise and reactive control of the character. It’s not so much that we wanted to move away from combat, but rather that we were driven by a creative desire to explore the beauty of football. We wanted to create an innovative experience that lets players feel the excitement of making the perfect pass or executing a beautiful volley kick, all from an immersive perspective. It just felt like a natural evolution for us.”
Rematch Focuses on Team-Based Mechanics
The parallels that Tarno highlights are sure to resonate with fans of Sloclap, even if they don’t have a particular interest in soccer. Beyond the gameplay elements, Rematch showcases the same bold and unique art style that Sifu employed so effectively, creating a cohesive visual connection between the two titles. This artistic consistency not only enhances the gaming experience but also appeals to a broader audience who appreciate the aesthetic quality of the games.
”Most football games focus on solo or 1v1 experiences, while we wanted to focus on team-based mechanics, tactical cooperation within a team. Also, other football games are viewed top-down, they lack a real sense of immersion on the pitch. Finally, by keeping the gameplay accessible and giving it an arcade feel, we want to deliver an experience that’s, above all, fun and satisfying to play!”
Tarno elaborated on the team’s vision to engage both casual gamers and competitive players, aiming to reach a broader audience. By catering to these diverse groups, they hope to create an inclusive gaming experience that resonates with a variety of players. This strategy not only enhances the game’s appeal but also fosters a vibrant community where different play styles can coexist and thrive.
Rematch is scheduled to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S during the summer of 2025. This exciting release promises to bring a fresh gaming experience to players across these popular platforms.
