Now that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially announced, excitement is building around the potential launch and post-launch games for the new console. The reveal trailer hinted at a new Mario Kart installment, but that’s likely just the beginning. One franchise that would be an excellent fit for the Switch 2’s launch is Fire Emblem, which hasn’t seen a new release since early 2023. This lull in Fire Emblem games might suggest that a new title is on the horizon, possibly making a surprise debut as a launch title for the Switch 2 or arriving sometime in 2025.
Fire Emblem News Was Scarce In 2024
Since it first started, especially after the unexpected popularity of Fire Emblem Awakening in 2012, the series has maintained a pretty steady release pattern. While it doesn’t launch a new game every year, a new title typically comes out every two to three years. However, since the release of Fire Emblem Engage in January 2023, there hasn’t been any new game announced, nor any updates on what might be next.
It’s quite typical for Fire Emblem to announce a new title in 2025, potentially during the Switch 2 Direct on April 2, and then launch it soon after. For instance, Engage was revealed in September 2022 and hit the shelves by January 2023. The series has even seen an impressive streak of four games released in four consecutive years: The Binding Blade in 2002, The Blazing Blade in 2003, The Sacred Stones in 2004, and Path of Radiance in 2005. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo has a Fire Emblem game up its sleeve for the Switch 2 launch or shortly thereafter.
Fire Emblem Could Get A Remake Or An Original Game
If a Fire Emblem game is indeed set to launch alongside the Switch 2, it raises the question of whether it will be a remake of a classic title or an entirely new installment. In the past, the first three Fire Emblem games were remade, with Echoes: Shadows of Valentia receiving particularly positive feedback. Many fans are eager for a remake of the “Jugdral duology,” which includes Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, as these titles never made it to the West. Another candidate for a remake is The Binding Blade, which also didn’t see a Western release, although its predecessor, The Blazing Blade, introduced many players to the series.
It’s also quite possible that we could see a new Fire Emblem game on the horizon. With two years having passed since Fire Emblem Engage, fans are eager for fresh content. While there hasn’t been any information about the potential setting or storyline, speculation is running wild. Given the success of the route splits and multiple narratives in Fire Emblem Three Houses, a similar approach could be a hit for the next installment.
A Fire Emblem game, whether a remake or an original, would be a fantastic addition to the launch lineup of the Switch 2. As a tactical RPG, it would really shine among other potential titles from Nintendo, like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Kirby, or Metroid. This could also be a perfect chance to introduce themed Joy-Cons or accessories, especially if the game showcases factions with distinct colors, reminiscent of the countries in Fire Emblem Fates or the houses in Fire Emblem Three Houses. While nothing has been officially announced yet, the time since the last release, the silence on updates, and the possibility of several major first-party titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 make a Fire Emblem game a strong candidate for the lineup.
