Hirofumi Yoshida is the one who made a deal with the Octopus Devil, which Pochita completely devoured after Denji transformed into the Chainsaw Devil. Despite Yoshida’s best efforts to control the rampaging Pochita, he ultimately failed, as Pochita ended up consuming both him and the Octopus Devil, wiping out their existence along with several other Devils.
Now that Denji and Asa find themselves in serious trouble with no way out of the Aging Devil’s realm, Pochita steps in and makes Denji regurgitate a helpful Devil to assist them. With the Octopus Devil back in play, what will their fate be in Chainsaw Man?
What is the Octopus Devil?
A useful Devil for ranged and defensive attacks
The Octopus Devil in Chainsaw Man represents humanity’s deep-seated fear of octopuses. Hirofumi Yoshida, a Public Safety Devil Hunter, is the one who has made a contract with this devil. The exact cost Yoshida pays to harness the Octopus Devil’s powers remains a mystery. However, in Chapter 189, it appears that Yoshida might be using parts of other humans’ bodies to shield himself from harm. With the consent of the other individual, he can utilize that body part to call forth a large part of the Octopus Devil’s abilities.
Yoshida skillfully makes use of the Octopus Devil’s powers in various ways. By crossing his middle finger over his index finger, he creates a shape that resembles an octopus, enabling him to summon a large tentacle. This method serves as a great defensive tool for him.
Besides calling forth a massive tentacle, when Yoshida utters the word “Ink,” the Octopus Devil releases a thick, ink-like smokescreen. This creates an opportunity for a surprise attack, as it hides his movements and lets him sneak up on his foes. However, if he’s facing an experienced opponent, this tactic can also hinder their movements, though it may not always be effective.
While not much is revealed about the Octopus Devil’s character, it appears to be very obedient to Yoshida. Unlike other Devils, like the Fox or Ghost Devil, who require a specific price before granting their powers, the Octopus Devil allows Yoshida to use its abilities without hesitation. This is evident when Yoshida is seen conversing with Kishibe while the Octopus Devil fights off the remaining Dolls created by Santa Claus. The details of the agreement Yoshida struck with the Octopus Devil to access its powers on such a grand scale remain a mystery.
Octopus, Mouth, Snow, and Bitterness Erased
Once Denji transforms into the true Chainsaw Devil, Pochita, he sees Nayuta’s severed head on the sushi conveyor belt, prompting him to start consuming the Devils he encounters. Meanwhile, Yoshida, who is part of the Public Safety Devil Hunters, is assigned to retrain Pochita with the help of the Octopus Devil. Sadly, things don’t go as planned for either Yoshida or the Octopus Devil, as Chapter 174 reveals that Pochita wiped out the Octopus, Mouth, Snow, and Bitterness Devils.
How did the Octopus Devil make its return?
After Denji came to his senses, he asked Pochita to make him barf up a Devil that would get him out of his situation
As noted earlier, Pochita consumed and obliterated the Octopus Devil during his chaotic spree. Since that time, Denji, Asa, and Yoru have entered the realm of the Aging Devils. The Aging Devil was once hired by the Public Safety Devil Hunters to take down Pochita, but this task comes with a terrifying cost.
The Aging Devil strikes a bargain with the Public Safety Devil Hunters, consenting to be devoured and eliminated by Pochita in exchange for the lives of 10,000 Japanese children aged from infancy to nine years, who are to be killed in front of mirrors. Without hesitation, former Finance Minister Tadashi Hasegawa agreed to these terms and provided additional resources to ensure the capture of the children in that age group.
- The Aging Devil is a Pirmal Devil with no attachments to life.
- It primarily attacks through mirrors, but in the Chainsaw Devil’s case, it was in person as it wanted to be eaten by Pochita.
Shortly after the agreement was reached, Yoru launched an attack on the Aging Devil, sending their minds into the realm of the Aging Devil. In this peculiar world, people no longer require food or water as they gradually transform into trees. It is only when the tree decays that their minds and bodies completely merge with nature, allowing them to return to their physical forms in the real world. With no way out, Denji and Asa find themselves in a heated argument until Pochita intervenes, prompting Denji to regurgitate the Snow and Bitterness Devils.
This marked the first sign of freedom for Denji when he discovered that Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, still existed in the real world. As Denji figured out that he could consume the humans transformed into trees, he quickly found himself feeling hungry. Meanwhile, Asa crafted a makeshift axe to chop into the trees, uncovering the insides of the trapped humans. Although Denji managed to feed on the intestines and pulled the chain connected to his heart to bring Pochita back to life, it wasn’t enough to escape their predicament.
If you’re struggling, make me barf up some kinda useful Devil!!
Thanks to Denji’s quick thinking, Pochita manages to regurgitate Yoshida, the one who made a contract with the Octopus Devil, effectively bringing him back. All the Devils that Pochita consumed during this time have also returned from erasure. It seems that Pochita’s decision to make Denji bring up Yoshida, who has a solid understanding of Devils, was a brilliant move. Even though it hasn’t been long since Yoshida and the Octopus Devil reappeared, he quickly grasps the situation and devises a plan to insert his hand into Denji’s mouth, which connects to Pochita’s stomach in the real world.
In this scenario, Yoshida taps into the powers of the Octopus Devil to bridge a link to the real world. However, he is swiftly interrupted, and Yoru faces a similar fate at the hands of the Aging Devil. As previously noted, Yoshida has the ability to replace his own body parts with those of others in order to harness greater powers from the Octopus Devil. In this case, he utilizes Fumiko Mifune’s heart to call forth the Octopus Devil and launch an attack on the Aging Devil.
