In a gaming landscape largely ruled by the EA Sports FC series, developer Sloclap is aiming to carve out a niche with Rematch, an engaging soccer game for fans looking for a fresh perspective on the sport. This indie title highlights quick-paced, 5v5 matches that prioritize teamwork and strategy. Unlike the conventional top-down view, Rematch features a camera positioned behind the player, enhancing the immersive experience.
Recently, Game Rant had a chat with Pierre Tarno, the Creative Director at Sloclap. He shared insights on what the team believes will set Rematch apart in its genre, emphasizing the significance of teamwork in the gameplay. Tarno also pointed out some parallels between Rematch and Sloclap’s previous titles, Sifu and Absolver.
Immersion is Crucial For Rematch’s Success
Players familiar with Absolver or Sifu understand that Sloclap places a strong emphasis on immersion. Both titles feature fluid combat that appears straightforward but offers layers of complexity for those looking to master it. It seems Sloclap has perfected the art of combat in video games, leading many to anticipate that their next project would enhance this approach. However, the soccer game Rematch takes a surprising turn. Tarno clarified that the two games might not be as different as they seem, sharing insights.
”There are similarities. These are all games about bodies in movement, with a focus on precise and reactive control of the character. It’s not so much that we wanted to move away from combat, but rather that we were driven by a creative desire to explore the beauty of football. We wanted to create an innovative experience that lets players feel the excitement of making the perfect pass or executing a beautiful volley kick, all from an immersive perspective. It just felt like a natural evolution for us.”
Rematch Focuses on Team-Based Mechanics
The similarities highlighted by Tarno are sure to delight Sloclap fans, even if they aren’t particularly into soccer. Beyond the gameplay elements, Rematch keeps the eye-catching and unique art style that Sifu is known for, creating a connection between the two titles. While games like EA FC and the former FIFA series allow players to see the whole field and switch between characters freely, Tarno mentioned that Rematch is adopting a distinctly different strategy.
”Most football games focus on solo or 1v1 experiences, while we wanted to focus on team-based mechanics, tactical cooperation within a team. Also, other football games are viewed top-down, they lack a real sense of immersion on the pitch. Finally, by keeping the gameplay accessible and giving it an arcade feel, we want to deliver an experience that’s, above all, fun and satisfying to play!”
Tarno shared insights on the team’s goal to draw in both casual and competitive gamers, aiming to reach a broader audience. If Rematch can achieve the objectives Tarno mentioned, fans could have an exciting and innovative option to enjoy instead of EA FC when the game is released later this year.
Rematch is scheduled to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in the summer of 2025. You can sign up for the beta right here!
