It’s been pretty much a given that another mainline Fallout game is on the horizon. Although Bethesda hasn’t shared many details about their plans for the next chapter in this beloved post-apocalyptic series, chatter and speculation about Fallout 5 have been buzzing ever since Fallout 4 was released in 2015. After nearly a decade, the Amazon TV series that premiered last year reignited interest in the franchise, bringing in a fresh wave of fans.
The show highlighted Maximus (Aaron Moten) as a key character, who started off as a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, a hallmark of the Fallout series. While the upcoming game might deviate from the norm, it’s reasonable to think that this organization will still play a role in the story, even if it’s not as prominent as it was in Fallout 3. As fans eagerly await updates on Fallout 5, which may be years away, this could provide Bethesda with the opportunity to explore new directions, particularly with its traditional Vault Dweller protagonists. For Fallout 5, the studio might consider introducing a character who, like Maximus, has a strong and immediate connection to the Brotherhood.

How Fallout 5 Could Have a Brotherhood of Steel Protagonist Like Maximus
Maximus’ journey in the series is truly captivating, and his character has received much acclaim. Rescued as a child by the Brotherhood after a tragic attack on his hometown of Shady Sands, he looked up to the group and was determined to join their ranks. However, as he climbs the ladder and earns their trust, he begins to realize that the Brotherhood of Steel may not be as noble as it appears. Throughout his service, Maximus grows increasingly disillusioned with both his fellow members and the organization’s practices. After meeting a more classic Fallout hero, Lucy MacLean from Vault 33, he ultimately decides to forge his own path in the Wasteland.
In this context, instead of introducing another Vault Dweller, Fallout 5 could immerse players in the role of a Brotherhood Initiate, akin to Maxmius. One potential storyline could involve the player character being raised within the Brotherhood’s teachings and undergoing their final rites before embarking on a significant mission. As the narrative unfolds, the protagonist might begin to question the Brotherhood’s principles and objectives, leading to a pivotal decision to break away and confront the challenges of survival alone.
One possibility for Fallout 5 could be to introduce a range of character backgrounds, including a former Brotherhood soldier who departed for personal or enigmatic reasons but still possesses a wealth of skills and knowledge from the organization. This approach would enhance some of the core RPG elements of Fallout and would fit seamlessly into the upcoming game. Although the specifics of its implementation are still unclear, Fallout 5 has the potential to present the Brotherhood of Steel from various viewpoints, allowing players to experience the story as a member, which could lead to exciting narrative and role-playing experiences.
